#Yellow Bracelet to Counter Year of the Dragon. #TinaTang

This morning, my parents called me specifically to tell me that this Year of the Dragon (the Water Dragon) was not a good one for me, Year of the Dog (Metal Dog). I, naturally, had googled this prior to the new year and had meant to call them to ask what I should do.

In Chinese astrology, it is believed that you can wear certain things to try to "counter" these so called forces that we have no control over. I told them when I googled the situation I read that wearing a red ribbon would be helpful to me this year. Contrary to what I thought, my mother informed me, "No, you need to wear yellow...yellow underwear, yellow ribbon, but always something yellow."

Wanting to make sure that I have all the protection possible, making my "yellow" citrine bracelet.

I don't necessarily believe in this pre-conceived fate, but why tempt it? As soon as I got into the office, I started making myself a citrine hand-knotted yellow string bracelet which I plan on wearing all year.

I am hopefully protected.

Trust me, I googled this to find out, why yellow? My mom has been reading some Chinese astologists forecasts and apparently, yellow provides great power to protect. I haven't found one thing as to why. Old world, like the Chinese, always have superstitions which simply cannot be explained. Here is more on the Year of the Dragon and your sign here.

Sterling silver and fine silver are different in that sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and fine silver is 99.9% pure silver.

My DeKooning Squiggle Necklace is made of sterling silver.

What else is in sterling silver?
The other 7.5% are alloys such as copper and zinc.

Why do they add the other stuff to sterling silver?
Other alloys are added to fine silver to make sterling silver in order to strengthen the metal. Fine silver is rather soft.

Why does silver tarnish?
Tarnish is a chemical reaction on silver that only happens on the surface. It is a reaction between the silver and hydrogen sulfide, which the body produces and an element found in the air. Tarnish doesn't hurt the silver, just puts a dark layer of patina on it. To clean your silver, I always suggest this method in video.

Wear It With Pride: Custom Name #Necklace & #Bracelet by #TinaTang

I was thrilled when UnCommonGoods.com contacted me in November 2011 about my custom name plate necklace. They requested samples as they were considering it for their Spring 2012 catalog. I never assume anything is "done" until it actually happens.

Well, it's happened! As you probably know from my Facebook post in early January, my custom name necklaces and bracelets are officially on the UnCommonGoods.com site. That same week I went live on their site, I received my first official custom orders! The two orders featured unusual names; Kiki and Waylon, both a challenge for me.

I just picked up the silver castings today from the caster.

The castings were made by hand in wax and I asked the casters to shoot directly to silver, no mold. That means these two names cannot be made again unless I start from scratch in wax.

This is "kiki" pre-polished and pre-soldered with chain.

What a great name for a kid - Waylon!

I was thrilled when I received an email from the Accessories Director of Marie Claire in November 2011 requesting a hi res photo of my diamond flame necklace. I designed that piece a couple years ago and have noticed sometimes it takes time before a design ripens and has it's "peak moment". Flame necklace, it's your time in the spotlight!

The most unusual feature of the Diamond Flame Necklace is that it's reversible!

One side of this necklace is white diamonds and the flip side is black diamonds!

Joining an 8 Ball Pool League: Hobbies of #Jewelry Designer #TinaTang

I joined an 8 ball pool league and last night was my first meeting.

I am a complete beginner outside of the goofing around on rare occasion at a bar with friends. One night this past fall, while out with friends spontaneously playing pool in a local bar, we played against two women who revealed that they were in a pool league.

The patch they gave us last night.

That's where my idea was born. After researching billiard bars near my office, I found Society Billiards & Bar which hosts a beginner-intermediate 8 ball league.

What is 8 ball? According to the InternationalPoolTour.com, "to win a game of pool, a player must legally pocket the 8 ball after which time his group of balls, either solids or stripes, is completely pocketed, or by pocketing the 8 ball on a legal break shot.

My goal for this "season" in the league is to hone my skills and be able to sink balls 80% of the time where my eye envisions.

I warned my team mates that I am a true beginner and still need to understand the national 8 ball rules. I played two different women handicapped higher than me. Last night, I won both games. End goal for season: to be a total unexpected pool shark.

Sounds like a jewelry industry marketing term, "semi-precious", doesn't it? Would you ever say that about a human being..."Oh, she is only semi-precious?" What exactly does it mean?

The general acceptance is that a "precious" stone only refers to diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. These four stones are a rarity to find naturally versus the "semi-precious" stones, and thus the reason for the luxury pricing.

Scientists have developed laboratory methods to re-create these precious four so that the chemical composition is exactly the same as when created in nature. The price of laboratory created precious stones are not the same as naturally found precious stones. As logic would have it, if nature created it, the rarity factor is a relevant characteristic affecting price and value.

"Semi-precious" umbrellas a large quantity of stone types and even under this category there are varying degrees of value. On the higher end of semi-precious are stones such as aquamarine, tanzanite, and opal and on the lower end are stones such as amethyst, garnet, quartz.

Ironically, finding a high clarity semi precious stone such as an aquamarine can be more difficult than finding the same clarity quality in a diamond. Above is a photo of a beautiful H. Stern aquamarine ring which was priced at $1500.

Admittedly, while I will always take a diamond over a semi-precious stone (as a gift), I do find that semi precious stones often are more versatile with which to design due to the variety in colors and availability of the stones.

As a small business owner, I rarely take vacations. I am always afraid I may miss out on a customer visit or request. When my close friend from high school, Lillie, asked me this past summer if I wanted to take a mini trip to Las Vegas in Jan 2012, I reluctantly said yes, secretly worrying about what I would do with my business while away.

In fact, in November and December, I was already stressing about how I was going to manage the time away. This happens often with us small business owners where a day away means a day the business is left by itself, like a baby!

Day one: Lillie demanded I consume a delicious Bloody Mary.

Thankfully, I admit once I got on the plane to Vegas, all those worries melted away into a fog. Lillie, the constant planner, had our entire itinerary preplanned. Unlike my life in New York, I simply followed and made no decisions except during mealtimes on what my entree would be.

Lillie booked a steak house, Prime, which meant my only thinking involved what type of steak.

Now that I am back, I am pleased that I released those apprehensions to take a few days away from my New York City life and its worries. I gambled, ate, ate, then ate. I'm sure these are activities I can easily do in New York, but having Lillie guide my life for 3 days was simply heavenly.

Who invented birthstones and why? #TinaTang #Jewelry

Surprisingly, the concept of birthstones was not created by the jewelry industry in modern western culture to sell more, the idea of them has been long with us dating as far back as 1500BC.

It was only in 1912 that the National Association of Jewelers decided to standardize the list of gemstones that different cultures have long believed in. In Indian culture, the Ayurvedic science of medicine believed in the magical properties of gemstones that influenced the planets in how they affected the different signs of the zodiac.

The stones act as an "antennae" to particular planets whose influence may be needed or lessened for certain signs. The gemstones supposedly absorb or reflect planetary rays or vibrations. One would consult an astrologer to create his/her astrological chart and determine what might be needed in his/her life.

Birthstones are referenced in the bible in a few relevant passages notably in Exodus and Revelations where there exist twelve colored stones set in the breastplate of justice. A side biblical note, within the bible there are twelve apostles, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve months, twelve zodiac signs...all very interesting numerically.

In researching the history of gemstones for this mini post, I was surprised at the relevance of them in both eastern and western civilization. All this time, I simply wondered why I had yellow topaz assigned to my November month when I would much prefer April's diamond or March's aquamarine. I suppose I need to start embracing the citrine/yellow topaz as there is some mysterious reason beyond my understanding.

Was this year as challenging for you as it was for me?

I closed my remaining brick and mortar store at the Limelight Marketplace, downsized my business so that I parted ways with my long time employee and good friend, Bobbie, Midori, and wonderful new employee, Kirsten. I had to redesign the structure of my business to become a one woman show, predominantly online.

A toast to you and your persistence to carry on.

This year of significant structural changes represented endings and new beginnings. I usually don't think about the idea of New Year's as a literal beginning for resolutions; I like to think of resolutions as something one starts immediately to which one remains gradually committed.

Sharing with you some of my 2012 life goals:

1. Continue to grow my relationship with you through facebook, twitter and this blog. I love hearing from you and what you are doing!
2. Get diesel enough to compete in mud runs with the end goal being the October 2012 Tough Mudder, a 10 mile mud run littered with Special British Forces military obstacles.
3. Getting my personal training certificate so that I can teach/motivate and help others get into shape, something I love doing in my spare time.

Diego Rivera as #Jewelry Design Inspiration. #TinaTang #

Oftentimes, I need to step out of my routine in order to be re-inspired. Today, I planned to fulfill this need with a visit to the Diego Rivera exhibit at the MOMA in New York City.

Rivera's folksy, "one with the people" style, is what most attracts me to his art. The color and style of his human renditions evoke a strong emotional connection between artist and people's struggle in society. The last retrospective MOMA hosted of his work was in 1931. Rivera's best known for his establishment of the Mexican Mural Movement in Mexican Art as well as his creative union with artist Frida Kahlo.

I have been working in an artist book called One Sketch A Day to reignite a different creativity in my daily life. Trying to think about new jewelry designs can feel forced and imprisoning which is why I am playing around with other methods to explore the creative spirit. In this sketchbook, I only need to do one little drawing a day, nothing that feels like toiled homework. Most days, I do it on the train or in brief moments at the subway platform.

Garnet is a semi-precious stone often used in jewelry, popular for it's deep red color. It actually comes in nearly every color including red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, dark brown, etc with the deep red being the most commonly associated color. Another popular garnet family member is the tsavorite which is a beautiful emerald green color.

The word "garnet" is derived from a latin term meaning "like a grain". This semi precious stone was actually first used industrially in sandpaper and is still sometimes used in sandblasting.

For those who believe in healing powers of stones, garnets aid in increasing self confidence, increasing courage and assisting in revealing past lives. It is also thought to attract love. Don't we all need a little of that?

Garnet also happens to be the January birthstone for all you January babies.

My parents, sister and her husband, flew to NYC this weekend to spend Christmas with me. The last time my parents were here was ten years ago and their memory of New York lingers on the pre-Giuliani days where subways were marked with graffiti and streets littered with garbage.

For our family, our traditional big dinner is Christmas eve where it is my father who normally cooks a large Chinese meal that includes a roast duck with sticky rice stuffing. Being in New York City, I wanted to pick a Christmas eve dinner in a cozy, quintessential West Village restaurant. Thus, we dined at my new favorite, Bell, Book & Candle on 10th Street.

Called the Brown Bag Apple Pie, I am staking claim on it so no one else can share.

What made the dinner very special is that I invited my best friend, Sima, who happens to be Jewish, to join the Tangs.

Sima's drinking her traditional red wine, and me... lucky me, a Macallan 25 year!

The bartender made a mistake and quoted me a price on the Macallan 25 year, poured me a glass, and afterwards told me that the price really should have been $80 a glass, but she would honor her original quote. That was the best darn scotch I have tasted.

During dinner, to commemorate the occasion, we wanted to take a silly picture. My mom, Lucia Tang, is always up for something fun, never afraid of what others may think, posed right with us when requested.

This is officially my all time favorite photo of us Tang ladies.

What a lovely Christmas eve meal, woven with the silly, spent with family and loved ones. To end the Christmas weekend, we ate the most cliche December 25th dinner where all restaurants are typically closed. We went to Chinatown, where everything operated as if a normal day, and dined on cheap Chinese.

I don't mean to sound sappy, and trust me there were moments of family stress, but I truly had a lovely smile evoking memory of this past weekend with my family in New York City.

This is my busy season, and this week, my busiest week of the entire year. I just wanted to send a big grateful thank you to you for reading, for being interested in my jewelry designs. I wish you from the depths of my heart, a wonderful end of the year with wishes of many good things to come for you.

I worked today and was able to see many of my lovely loyal clients who regularly came to my Greenwich Village store. Not only did I feel grateful for them remembering me for their gift giving, I thought, "if I have to be working when everyone else is shopping, it always helps if your shopping partner is working with you." It was a day filled with warm fuzzies.

There are three essential tools I use on a regular basis which if you had at home, could use to do simple repairs or adjustments to your jewelry. All three of these tools can be purchased at your local hardware store including Home Depot: Flat Nose Pliers, Needle Nose Round Pliers, and Wire Cutters. Below I will explain the purpose of each tool.

I prefer not to buy the ones made in Pakistan or China but rather those made in Germany. I can personally attest to the quality differences in the origin of manufacture.

Flat Nose Pliers: Here I am using it to close off something hanging on an ear wire.

The flat nose pliers above are used to grip/grab things to open or close. You can use the round nose pliers below to do the same, but the round nose would leave a mark on the item you are gripping since the surface on the round nose is not flat.

Round Nose Pliers are key for wire twisting.

Jewelry makers use the round nose pliers to make perfect circles or to create the shape above so that the bead with headpin through it is able to hang from another surface.

Wire Cutters are used as tiny scissors that cut metal or wire.

Wire cutters are used by tradesmen in the construction industry and the only difference with the ones jewelry designers use is the size. We use very small versions compared to those of electricians and other construction tradesmen.

These three tools are an essential for beginning jewelry makers or for those who wish to accomplish minor jewelry repairs at home.

A year ago, a friend advised me, "You should check out Pinterest." I thought, "Oh lord, not another social networking site that I need to learn and add to my time," and thus, I brushed it off.

On my work "to do" list this week, I made Pinterest a top priority to simply check out. After spending over an hour last night, out of pure delight, starting my own "boards", I am able to explain to you the appeal of this wonderful site.

Do you shop online? Are you online surfing often? This is a great way to gather images or inspirations you adore and to group items that catch you eye. Other Pinterest users can see what you "pin" and share or "repin" items they like that you have chosen.

There is something appealing to gathering the images that make you smile and grouping them together. For an artist or designer, it serves also as an online inspiration board. For a shopper, Pinterest could be a visual wishlist. By gathering your images, you are also able over time to see your change in taste, style or aesthetic. The board creation and "pinning" is much easier to than I anticipated.

The term "groupie" was one that I associated with foolish silly people who had nothing better to do with their time than to be obsessed with a singer, actor, or famed person. How could a person be so obsessed with an image, not real?

Last night, when watching opera bass singer, Rene Pape, sing a set of Christmas songs in the intimate setting of the Bulgari store on 5th Avenue, I felt the transformation. From rational thinking being who appreciates opera, I felt myself evolving, with each note sung, into a woman magnetized by the mere voice of a man who is a middle aged, slightly overweight, out of shape, smoker whom I would never have turned my head for as a passerby.

It's his voice, his evoked emotion, his confidence, and his stage presence. I just wanted to be near him and listen and listen and listen. I don't care if he is married, I want that German bass.

Have you ever concocted an outfit in your mind, something that doesn't seem like you, as if it is a costume? Today, I decided to realize a persona I had created in my imagination when I purchased a pair of long striped thigh wool socks.

I feel like a conservative version of a Japanese Harajuku girl.

When getting ready for work this morning, I decided I want to feel like someone else today. It all started with me pulling the socks out of the drawer, all the while thinking, "I can't let these be a purchase that sits in my drawer."

I committed to it the moment I put it all together on my bed.

I feel like a different woman today. After all, who wears thigh high wool striped socks besides Pippi Longstocking?

The little kid inside all of our spirits continually thrives. When I saw this necklace at the Bust Magazine Craftacular this weekend, my little spiritual girl inside quickly scurried to the vendor who turned out to be Maria Cooper of MettleShop.co.nz.

I rarely buy from other jewelry designers since I started my own business as I must represent my own advertising. However, this beautifully handmade necklace spoke to me. It literally said, "Stop, Tina, and look at me, feel me, wear me."

I'm wearing it today! I had "hello, beautiful" engraved on it.

1.When did you start making jewelry?

I started making jewelry when I came to America 5 years ago. I have always loved ‘art’ jewelry – work that somehow tells a story -that goes beyond just being pretty (2 of my favorites are New Zealand jewelers Jane Dodd & Ash Hilton).

2. What is your favorite piece of jewelry?

My most memorable piece of jewelry – that is a tough one! I think perhaps my blood necklace is that piece - I think It was the first time I matched a clear conceptual idea I had in my mind, with a new skill I was learning at the time, and it all came together for the dramatic effect I was looking for. I find it very satisfying to understand the different materials and techniques, and the explosion of possibilities that open up every time you learn something new.

3. Where did you learn to make jewelry?

Her pieces are so affordable considering they are handmade silver pieces with hand enameling.

Before FIT, I studied a lot at the 92nd street Y, doing their short courses over the course of a couple of years. I have taken a range of their general jewelry technique classes, as well as specific enameling classes. The Y is a really amazing resource, and the quality of teaching there is excellent – if people are interested in learning new jewelry skills, I would highly recommend the Y! I decided early on I wanted to keep making regularly, so I sorted out a studio setup of my own, and kept working beyond taking classes – it allowed me the freedom just to keep practicing and experimenting with what I had learned.

4. Where do we find your work?

At the moment, people see my work via my website www.mettleshop.co.nz. And I I periodically have things on Etsy (which will have a link on my website shortly!).

I will be wearing my Mettle Shop heart as part of my stripes uniform all winter.

One thing a New Yorker often misses when she vacations or moves elsewhere is the convenience and availability of the subway. The MTA is vitally woven into our being.

Honest admission: While I love the holiday spirit, this is a time of year woven with mixed emotions. We are supposed to be joyous to spend "quiet" time with our family as well as full of charitable Christmas spirit.

Nevertheless, December marks the end of a full year of anticipated goals, hopeful dreams, and self evaluation. In advertisements, happy mothers give gifts to their well behaved children, lovey couples kiss each other showing us that disagreements are unknown to their relationship.

I think this time of year can be infused with a sadness, an acknowledgement of how quickly time passes around us, raise questions about our relationships and highlight some of our seemingly unfulfilled January goals.

Look at the list and realize you did it!

This month, be kind to yourself and remember:
1. Change, real permanent change, takes time.

Others have prayer beads, I have my jewelry uniform that gives me calm to the touch. I go through periods of wearing the same thing over and over regardless of occasion. I talked about my clothing uniform in this post here. Having a uniform also applies to my daily accessories and I wanted to find out if you do the same.

Right now, I have been wearing these two necklaces which are a combination of charms that I created.

I play with the necklaces frequently without thinking. It just makes me feel good to have them on.

One is an engraved locket with photos of Bruno inside. The other necklace is a combination of my Minatour Horn, the Red Heart charm, and my 14kt gold diamond Year of the Dog pendant.

After creating the heart hoops and finding that I wear them nearly every day, I decided to make stars and clovers for those ladies who simply aren't into hearts. My production team finally finished polishing and adding the ear wires on, so, naturally, it's time to test drive them! Large and light, these hoops are the Lucky Charms of Hoochie Momma Hoops.

I have the large star and small clover on here. Very 80's with the 2 different earrings?

For those who attended a private school requiring uniforms, you must revel in the freedom of being an adult who may choose to dress freely to work. For me, I embrace a uniform. The uniform doesn't need to be exactly the same daily, but it is a conceptual idea that allows one not to think in the morning.

This past summer, I had a uniform of dresses and wedges which I talked about in this post here.
Last winter, my uniform was inspired by the lovely Gwyneth Paltrow of whom I am infinitely jealous of. Grey, grey with leggings, grey with a jacket... Grey the color that is a color without being black, but allows one to have a uniform look. I talked about the winter grey uniform here.

Long enough to go below the butt, I wear this top with black or navy jeggings.

This winter, my uniform will be stripes. I've discovered brand, Edith A. Miller, who makes the most comfortable all cotton, made in USA, tops. I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I have returned to Creatures of Comfort ( in Nolita) five times to purchase the tops, thus I own five. Five striped tops to wear with jeggings.

Honoring a teacher. #TinaTang #Jewelry

Tonight I attend the one year memorial service of my tai chi teacher, Master Cheng Hsiang Yu. Never in my life have I had a teacher who so profoundly touched my life in which my daily routine always includes the practice he bestowed upon me.

I have spoken about him in this post when he passed away last year. He is the first and only teacher I have learned from that truly embodied the principles and discipline he insisted upon. The term "master" was not something he labeled himself so that students entering his class could purchase the use of. He was a master in that each day of his life until death, he continually pushed, refined, respected the tai chi and Shaolin forms he learnt as a teen and out of respect and love of it, passed on to others. In the martial art form grew lessons on patience and an approach to life that comes only from grueling self work.

Some Master Yu mottos that constantly echo in me:

1. Don't think, just do.
2. Practice.
3. No pain, no gain.
4. Uncomfortable now means comfortable later.

For those of you unfamiliar with tai chi, it is the most difficult and grueling exercise I've ever tackled. So much so, I often have the urge not to do it. It's harder than boxing, weights, running, yoga, and everything else I have ever done.

I have never been to an official gala, the type where the "society" photographer is chronicling the guests coming into the cocktail room for the NY Times. My friend, Kim Hastie, whom I know from my volunteer work at the Metropolitan Opera Young Associates, invited me the NYC Opera Gala where she was the Young Patron Co-Chair. At the time when I purchased the tickets, I gave no thought to the dress code.

Full length dresses are recommended for events like these.

I was a little nervous because I didn't plan on buying a full length ball gown for this one off event. Lucky for me, a wonderful designer named Butter by Nadia makes jersey dresses that fit any figure and whose fabric literally feel like "butter". Nadia used to be a dancer and her inspiration was to design dresses that moved, looked beautiful, and that fit all figures. This is the dress that Sima handed down to me since she has been a fan for years.

The jewelry I ended up wear was my long black onyx Wilma necklace. Navy does go with black, because I said so.

This can be worn long or wrapped around twice, which is what I did.

I wore the Lucia earrings in gold since the necklace was bold enough. The earrings just needed to add a little gold to my face.

This is the silver version, I wore the gold.

I also stacked a few bracelets like these two:

The Blue and Yellow Royal bracelet tied back into the navy pantsuit.

The Gold Fill Lucia Bracelet just goes with everything.

The evening contained delicious food, short performances by some new young opera talent that the NYC Opera proudly fosters and a visual meal of upscale people watching. I felt truly like I lived in New York City last night.

It took me an hour to do and redo my hair as I was fickly contemplating what to do.

Does spending Thanksgiving alone sound awful to you? I have something to share...I did this year, and out of choice. The original plan I had didn't work out and I also didn't feel like trekking to my parents' home and dealing with the grumpy holiday travel hassle and finding a kennel for Bruno, thus, I chose to spend this Thanksgiving by myself.

Outside of my parents and a couple friends, I didn't tell anyone as I didn't want to hear the "awww" blanketed with the tone of deep pity. In fact, I was looking forward to it! A friend who had done a solo Thanksgiving in the past, told me I should plan my day out, figure out what I was making, plan my activities and just enjoy my solitude.

If you read my facebook posts, I decided to make two wonderful entrees which I could eat for the rest of the week: pork loin roast with butternut squash and apricots and a turkey with olives and cherries. Most of my life, I have never enjoyed cooking, nor have I cooked much for myself. The past couple years, I have embarked on new adventures doing things I never have done and cooking is one of those activities.

After my entrees were cooked, I walked to my local movie theater and watched Scorcese's Hugo which was the perfect end to my deliciously "me" day. I didn't have to dress up, slug on the couch from over-eating, make conversation with uncles I don't know well, nor wash a dozen dishes. The city streets were quiet; the day felt quietly suspended in time. I absolutely would do it again.

P.S. I also danced alone to songs that I love that came on while I was prepping my Thanksgiving meal.

I write in my journal every morning and in it I devote a daily section about aspects of my life for which I am grateful. I'll share them with you now on the eve on Thanksgiving. There is no particular order of importance, just a list of things I appreciate in my life:

He obviously sees food in my hand.

1. My dog, Bruno, who always makes me feel appreciated and inspires a chuckle every single day.

The trio: a rare occasion when Patti was in town.

My twin, soul sister, and otherwise known as my husband/wife.

2. My best friends, Patti and Sima, who have been there especially during the roughest times, always batting for me 100%.

We were the only vendors dancing at this event. Why? Because it was Journey's Don't Stop Believin'.

3. Being able to create as my living, enjoy it, and meet the wonderful clients-friends that I have over the years and years to come.

My living room, which I decorate in a shabby chic style.

4. My apartment, which is the perfect size, layout, and atmosphere of peace and calm.

Family reunion with my sister, her husband, her stepson, and my cousin.

5. My family, especially my parents, who never cease to surprise me in what they are willing to accept of what I tell them. I didn't have a family photo on hand so the above is a pleasant substitute.

Redefining Hoochie Momma Hoops. #TinaTang #Jewelry

I have been wearing my heart hoops every day because they are big, light and they make me feel happy. Inspired by my newish design, I decided to make something similar in stars and clovers. I created them in wax, cast them into silver and had my production team solder rings on them so they can become Hoochie Momma hoop earrings.

Knowing that not everyone wants huge, I made two sizes for each shape. The rings are where the ear wires will be soldered.he Hoochie Momma hoops:

I literally wear these Heart Hoops every single day and forget I have them on.

I am giddy about getting the new hoops produced as I will be wearing the clover hoops daily for a couple months and temporarily retire the hearts. The feeling is that of a little kid who got to eat her favorite candies after her mom said "no" and changed her mind.

A name is equally important as the creation itself. What's in a name? The name evokes a sentiment, a feeling, a sensory appeal. The naming of pieces often stumps me as I can easily create a graphic image in 3D but to label it is to give the piece a definitive personality.

The new pieces I tried on in yesterday's post need names. As I photographed them today for you, I thought of one artist whose work I saw in exhibition years ago: Willem de Kooning. These pieces make me think of him.

Now officially called the De Kooning Earrings.

Willem De Kooning was an abstract expressionist born in Holland who was part of the New York School of which Jackson Pollack was also grouped. (1904-1997)

Do the earrings above feel inspired by this?

When you buy a new outfit or new shoes, do you go home and try them again, admiring yourself in the mirror? I sure the hell do! For me, picking up designs from my production company is the same as purchasing something new for my closet. I cannot wait to get back to the office to try it on and imagine all my clients ooo'ing and ahhh'ing over the new pieces, (at least that is my aspiration).

Today, I picked up the pieces I created in wax in late September.


They look heavy but aren't. As a regular customer, you probably know that I strive to make light earrings that stay secure.

This is my top five right now:

2. Three or Four day trip to Paris: $2-3,000 to include air, hotel and shopping.

I would eat pain au chocolat with my cafe creme.

I had a lovely visit this afternoon from one of my old employees, Midori. She worked in my flagship store in the village and also in my Limelight location. I referred to Midori as our resident style guru because no matter what she threw on, she always looked stylishly hip. She just knows how to put it all together.


Midori is rocking that fedora hat. One would never know that she wore it to hide unwashed hair.

Midori currently works at a lovely lingerie boutique called Kaori's Closet where they sell scrumptiously girly lingerie from all over the world.

I am always contented to see old employees as it reminds me that I created a work environment where we developed meaningful friendships. For me, owning a business is not just about making money and following a dream, it also means making an positive impact on those who chose to be with you on the ride.

This past weekend, my close friend, Lillie, whom I have known since I was 12, came to New York City to spend time with me. You have read about her in this post when I shared her Schaumberg, IL comedy club called Laugh Out Loud.

As a thank you gift for staying in my apartment, she bought us tickets to a NYC game called Accomplice. What an amazing way to spend 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon! It is part tour, part scavenger hunt, part game.

Lillie (with duck lips) and I at one of the scavenger spots, a bar called Iron Horse in Chinatown.

The day before the "game" you get a call from an actor pretending to be a mafia member telling you where to meet him. The next day at the "secret spot", you also meet the other 8-9 members of your group. The mafia man reveals the secret mission, gives you a set of clues that embark you on a scavenger hunt throughout NYC. Each clue leads to the next, with "mafia" encounters sprinkled in between, until your mission is complete.

I highly recommend this as a way to spend an afternoon with out of town guests in NYC, LA or London. You can be accomplice to your guest's NYC experience.

Let's be honest with each other, we all know Asians love karaoke. This is a unifying trait that spans all different ethnicity of Asians: Koreans, Phillipinos, Chinese, Japanese, etc. We have something inherent in our very different cultures that binds us... it is karaoke.

Confession: I have NEVER karaoked and that has been by very deliberate choice. Why? The thought of singing horribly in front of friends, family, let alone strangers, seems foolish and absurd. Who the hell would do something so silly?

This Friday, I chose to take a blind leap of faith and give it a try.

I am rapping to Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy".

For this very special neophyte occasion, I chose to glam up with transvestite false eyelashes.

I can wave to you with my eyelashes.

I rented a private room where I invited a couple brave friends who fear nothing, and my lovely open minded cousin, Debbie, joined us as well. I found Japas 38 in Korea-town which serves unlimited food and drink!

Naturally we had several beverages and food in the karaoke room prior to getting down to business.

For the treat you have been waiting for, here is a 10 second clip of my singing Pat Benatar's We Belong. Second confession: I loved karaoke. This is the start of a lifelong career in karaoke. I suppose the Asian gene in me was merely latent.

Tonight, I will be watching Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera by myself. For me, it's a significant night for two reasons. First, I usually buy my season tickets a year ahead and I buy them as a set of two thinking I will bring someone with me. Lately, I've been getting stressed out ahead of time wondering, "Who should I bring this time? Will they enjoy it?"

As a result, I decided, why not trade in the second tickets for additional single tickets and attend these operas by myself where I know I will fully enjoy it? I'm really learning this year about how to enjoy being by myself. I can easily go into a bar now by myself, have a drink, read a book, and/or chat with my neighbor.

As I've said in a previous post, my next personal goal will be to vacation by myself.

The second reason this evening will be inspiring is that I have a new found deep admiration for Mozart's prolific creativity. I knew Picasso had constantly created and evolved in his artwork but I never knew that Mozart was the same. Did you know he created over 600 pieces of music in his short lifetime? Four of his operas are amongst today's top 10 most performed operas worldwide, Don Giovanni being one of them. (Don Giovanni, is the Italian version of Don Juan)

Wouldn't we all love to have that longevity in our creations? It's all about constantly creating, using your given talent.

In the process of designing, I try to share with you each step. Now, with some of these new designs you've witnessed, it's vital for me to photograph and photoshop it properly for the website so that those who are far away from NYC can get an idea of what the pieces "feel" like.

While, nothing captures the beauty of an accessory like putting it on in real life, a photo is the next best thing online.

This weekend, I finally started photoshopping a few of my new pieces this and here they are:

I don't know if you saw my facebook post, but today I am suffering from a sugar hangover. Last night I had two cinnamon apple ginger infused whiskeys on the rocks while out with a friend. Then, to fulfill a sugar craving after that naturally sweetened whiskey, I indulged in some chocolate peanut butter cups.

New life to family heirlooms. #TinaTang #Jewelry

Do you remember my client, Danielle, who received a couple diamond rings from her deceased loving grandmother and she wanted to use the diamonds and create something modern to wear daily?

I posted the sketch of the design here. Next, came the computer rendering so that Danielle could see a 3-D jpeg and wax sample which I posted in this rendering post.

Today, I picked up the final and finished piece. Here it is.

Danielle's diamonds look so wonderful in the bezel setting and I love the ruby "nails" in the horseshoe.

Is there a part of your home, your bedroom, or your office that you mentally block because you know it would require sitting down to sort though, actually have to focus on?

I am ashamed to say that most of my studio/showroom has been that way since I've moved here. I believe I was in denial that my environs had changed after 8 years in my flagship Greenwich Village store. I woke up this morning with the deliberate intention of finally dealing with with my studio after being in this space for a year and a half.

I've moved everything finally onto the shelves so I could vacuum for the first time in six months.

Do you think I'm disgusting? I do. The last vacuum was when Bobbie was working with me in April of this year. She did the last vacuum, prompted by her own volition to have it clean in here.

Besides vacuuming, I finally sorted though all the old display items that I used in my old store. They were sitting on my storage shelves with the thought "maybe someday" I will use them. Bye, bye, old displays.

I feel great! Amazing what a vacuum does to making a space feel clean. I also shed half of my old "skin" of my previous space. Does this inspire you to sort that area you have been avoiding? It only took me 18 months to get to.

Hope your weekend was lovely! I took a day trip to Bed-Stuy to dine with twitter friend, Maxine, and her husband in a lovely Southern cuisine restaurant called Peaches. I highly recommend it with their cornflake crusted french toast, sweet and tangy chicken wings, and what I had, the spicy catfish with cheese grits. New York provides me endless neighborhoods to constantly discover and re-discover. I love New York.

While I like working in wax to create designs in sterling silver, my jewelry roots are in beading with stones. I have a few bags of faceted stones I have been meaning to work with and last night I finally felt inspired.

Simple... I love simple so that the stones speak for themselves. Here is a new necklace and earring set I designed last night done in a variety of colors. Presented below are my two favorite colors for this style: green onyx and garnet.

The richness of the green onyx is a lovely substitute to expensive emeralds.

I will always love the deep red of garnets which have a royal rich feel.

Trying to decide on a name for this series. Got any ideas?

A couple weeks ago, an online video network company called GeoBeats, contacted me to make a few mini videos about my pieces. At first, like the cynical NY'er that I am, I asked, "How much is it?". Their response was that it was free, mainly video contact for distribution through outlets such as Yahoo, Comcast, AOL, etc. I figured,"A new adventure? Sign me up!"

The Isela Series: Study in contrast. #TinaTang #Jewelry

I was inspired by Isela Beardslee when she hosted a trunk show in her home for me last month. When I got back to NYC, I immediately ordered some white bone beads and dark swarovski crystal beads which you saw me playing around with in this post.

When I told Isela about her as my source of inspiration, she suggested I play around with purple. Here it is!

The purple swarovski crystals set in blacked brass gives the pieces an edgy goth but girly feel.

Based on feedback from some lovely ladies on our facebook page, I have created the tassel earrings with just the crystal and the blackened steel. Matching bracelet to boot in hematite.

I never do dressy as my focus is "everyday" but I am liking this night feel!

I created a matching long tassel necklace for the set and I don't expect one to wear it all together, but I like to give you ladies choices.

With this long necklace, I think one can also layer with a long chain necklace.

I am working on creating a whole Isela series, a family of similarly color themed pieces to mix and match. Let me know what you think.

I have been working on a custom horseshoe pendant for my client, Danielle, who is using diamonds from her grandmother's ring. The sketches are on this post here. After she approved of the sketch, I had my production company create a computer rendering as well as a wax copy of the sketch so that Danielle could literally see the physical example of what it might look like.

Here is the computerized rendering of the pendant with her diamonds:

The only difference is that there will be rubies where the "nails" are instead of diamonds.

This is the wax sample of the computer rendering. Danielle held this up to her neck to get an idea of size, girth and dimensions of what the actual white gold pendant will look like when completed.

I always recommend looking at a wax copy before casting into a precious metal.

The finished necklace should be done by next week. I bet you and I both cannot wait to see the finished custom necklace set with diamonds and rubies.

I got a call on Saturday from a Miss Teela B, who after seeing the Heart Hoops on the blog post here, couldn't wait to purchase them. Miss Teela used to shop at my flagship Greenwich Avenue store thus dating herself to be a long time fan. I love you, Miss Teela.

I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Teela on Sunday when she came into the city to have a little fun. It was truly a joy to meet her for the very first time and find out she is an avid reader of my blog. The greatest pleasure was to see how gorgeous her newly purchased hoops look on her. She loves hoops and needs them light weight.

Not even purposely, I was wearing the hearts on Sunday, too!

I shot my first gun last night.

Bobbie and I went to the Westside Pistol and Rifle Range for our very first lesson and shooting session. This year I have been enthusiastically open to new experiences and when I saw the shooting lesson as a deal on Pusld.com, I excitedly called Bobbie to see if she wanted to join me. I knew she would be my literal partner in crime.

I am showing off my pretty darn decent shooting. Not bad for my first time, pat pat on back.

At first when our teacher went through all the safety procedures and protocol when handling the .22 rifle, I started panicking, scared I would forget the order of tasks. After a half hour of an intensely packed information session, our teacher, Howard, let us loose in the shooting range where the rifles are chained to the tables.

I didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I did!

Here I am taking aim, remembering everything Howard said about aiming.

One thing that Bobbie and I noted, our teacher, Howard, below, was noticeably fit. In fact, Bobbie uncharacteristically said, "I saw his butt, and thought, 'hello! I am listening to you!' "

He is pretty darn adorable, and well versed with his "weapons".

Mid-Week Production Run #TinaTang #Jewelry

This time of the week always yields little treasures. I stop by my production company and also the casters to see if anything is ready. My production company finally finished polishing the heart hoops! Naturally I need to "test drive" them. Here I am wearing them:

They are big and light! I think you will love them as much as I do.

These are what the hoops look like without the accessory of a human being:

I like the organic handmade feel of these hoops I did in wax.
I'll be posting them on the website tonight.

Do remember the post here when I picked up the pieces from the engraver? From the engraver, the pieces went to the caster to make a mold then into multiples. When I stopped by today, the casters finished casting the Nautilus shell series into silver, ready to be polished. The next step, I bring these raw pieces to my production company to blacken and polish. Most of these pieces will transform into necklaces.

The really large shells with the rope detail will be hoop earrings. I cannot wait to pick these finished pieces up later on this week! Of course, I hope to test drive them over the weekend. Mustang car or new earrings? Which would I rather test drive first?....That's a tough choice.

I love designing custom pieces! A long time client, Danielle, had two diamond rings handed down from her grandmother which she wants to make into one necklace she would wear daily. I suggested she get the diamonds graded first at GIA (Gemological Institute of America) which is the gold standard in diamond grading, respected globally. GIA inscribed a serial number on each diamond and indicated the unique aspects of her diamonds so she can always confirm what she gets back in return.

Today, Danielle came back with her two diamonds and our discussed sketch for her custom piece.

Can you see the diamonds in the bottom right? A .24ct and a .49ct diamond.

Danielle decided she wanted a horseshoe and we discussed where the diamonds would sit inside the horseshoe. It seems simple but often simple is what's beautiful. Our next step in the process is to get the wax model of it so she can see how it will look before it is cast into 14kt white gold. I'll keep you posted when we get to that step.

Doesn't she look like the friend you would have in your office whom you would trust your secrets to?

There is no other word but adorable for Kim.

1. How would you describe your style?

I think of my style as eclectic. I like to mix classic styles with bold trendy pieces, like a classic solid color sweater dress with cheetah print accessories or basic black pants and blouse with a stunning bold necklace, earrings and animal print shoes. (We can see it in the photo, Kim!) I am very fond of wearing the unexpected: getting noticed for what I'm wearing is always a thrill for me.

2. How did you discover Tina Tang Jewelry and what appeals to you about it?

I am always on the lookout for unique jewelry and accessories, especially from New York or New Jersey designers. I was browsing on etsy.com and a beautiful sterling silver necklace came up that said "Love". In the corner was a picture of the cutest designer and New York City right next to her and I thought, "I need to see more". Through a google search I found her blog and online store and fell in love. What appeals to me is that Tina's unique personality and positive attitude comes through with every design she creates. Her pieces are so fresh and original, but still very stylish and trendy. When I wear the Romeo Juliet Double Dagger Necklace, I get so many compliments from women and men. (Kim, you have me blushing).

3. What is your motto in life how you try to live by?

My favorite motto is by Confucious who said, "Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall." I've adopted that as my motto in life and how I live. I think everyone can relate to a time in their life when things were so difficult, it was hard to even get out of bed. But, it's not the mistakes we make or the failures we come upon, it's the way we handle them. It reminds me that I'm only human and mistakes happen, it gives me courage to take chances.

Kimberly's smile really does reveal everything she describes about herself in her interview.

4. How would your best friend describe you?

I am a good listener, loyal, bubbly and funny. I hope when they are in need of a pick me up or an ear to listen; I'm the one that they call. My friends are like my family to me. (We can tell that by looking at you, Kim).

5. What places are your fave restaurants or bars in your neighborhood?

I love a cute little pub called Canterbury Ales in Huntington Village, NY. When you step through the doors you immediately feel like you've been transported back in time to an old British pub in the Manchester suburbs. I also love "Lunch" aka "Lobster Roll", they have one in East Hampton, but there is one in Riverhead which is much closer.

6. What do you do for a living?

I work as a Medical Secretary for the Orthopedic Service at the Northport VA Medical Center. I assist the service with the day to day of running such a busy department and also help veterans with any of their needs. I consider this "my other full time job". I am also a wife and mom. I have a beautiful 5 year old boy named Sawyer Austin, which I consider my main "full time job". The balancing of family and work is something I enjoy, it keeps me motivated and busy, but I do also really love "me" time.

When I created my Nautilus series which I blogged about here, the last step before producing the pieces was the hand engraving that would add the last special detail to the silver models.

My hand engraver is a master. He naturally takes a little while to work his manual magic and today I picked up the finished pieces. He took my sketches that you saw in this post and engraved it onto my silver models.

I love the fish scales on this shell!

Can't wait until this is cast and I can make it into a necklace.

And, this large piece I am making into hoop earrings as well as a pendant. I always sigh with happiness when I see how George, my engraver, has made my vision a literal reality.

Once the engraving is blackened, the rope detail will pop.

No machine will ever replace the detailed spirit and soul a craftsperson applies to his trade.

As you know from yesterday's post, I have been playing around with some new beads. I created a necklace and bracelet and am trying to work on matching earrings.

I never expect a lady to wear all three together but it's nice to have different options of a color scheme to choose from.

I am really enjoying the simplicity of black, white, and grey...is it because winter is approaching? I ordered more beads in different sizes to see if I could come up with additional mutations/versions. Sense of play....it's all about playing and inspiration follows.

Inspiration has a revival affect. It's a reminder of life, a reminder of the energy that drives us. When I am not feeling inspired, I feel I have lost my sense of play.

Lucky for me today, I have some new beads and with those, a little life and inspiration!


I love the contrast of the white bone beads (cow bone) next to the black rhinestones.

Naturally, once inspired and created I have to try it on:

I strung the bracelet with elastic, making it easy on-easy off.

I am working on a few ideas for earrings. I have a long tassel in mind but I need to test drive the design to make sure it's practical. Inspiration makes me feel alive.

One of my twitter friends, @ToriHatesYou, who happens to also be a Chicago friend and client, asked me last week if I could make the pretzel into a ring.

At my Chicago trunk show, she purchased these pretzel studs which she wears all the time.

I love these little Pretzel Studs.

I never even thought of making the pretzel into a ring! It reminded me that some of my designs have morphed due to lovely client suggestions and this one is no different. Tori Olivares, thank you for such a lovely idea! I made the model to see how it would look.

The Pretzel Ring is such a simple yet elegant everyday ring (if I do say so myself).

So cute on.

This little morphed design reminded me that one must always be open to new ideas and the unexpected places from where they may originate.

Texas is a state of mind: Highlights #TinaTang #Jewelry

"Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word." - John Steinbeck.

Mr. Steinbeck so eloquently described my experience this past weekend in San Antonio and Austin, TX. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I felt like I had stepped into another country, so un-New York City. I had 3-4 friendly conversations with strangers within my first 10 minutes in Texas.
I'll be posting my mini video highlights tomorrow but here is a photo-montage of the dual trunk show.

I stayed with the constantly chipper, Jennifer Zepeda, who was one of my best Customer Service Ambassadors at my Greenwich Village flagship store. She and her family aptly represent big, bold Texas hospitality:

The Zepedas, mom, dad, Jennifer and boyfriend, Richard, took me to the San Antonio river walk to have delicious Mexican food.

The Zepedas are so grandly generous that I felt like one of the family. Jennifer's mom has such an edgy style, in fact, more so than any mom I have met in NYC. These are my pieces she wears constantly:

Mrs. Zepeda loves Dias de la Muertas and this skull ring is part of her daily wardrobe.

She purchased these two items and immediately put them on:

I admire a woman who embraces her style without apologies. Mrs. Zepeda rocked these Daggers.

She also got the horn necklace which she, like me, combined with other amulet charms:

On Sunday, I drove to Austin where host, Isela Beardslee, invited me to show in her beautiful home.

I am looking forward to returning to Austin and it's funky Greenwich Village atmosphere. At the end of my day there, I took my nephew, Peter, who is attending graduate school at UT-Austin, out to dinner.

When I do my trunk shows, the most enjoyable aspects of "doing business" is actually spending time with my hosts who happen to be friends or family. Who said one cannot mix business and pleasure?

I have an event to attend tonight, the Metropolitan Opera Season Preview party. I didn't know which earrings I wanted to wear with my outfit that adheres to the "cocktail" dress code. Thus, as a jewelry designer, I have the benefit of designing my own!

I wasn't liking anything I have in stock, similar to when you look in your closet for an outfit or look in your fridge for something new to eat. I had these:

and I also pulled these out:

I carved these Fancy Chandeliers in wax years ago and they are just
too familiar to me to be fun.

Opera Boot Camp with @MetOperaGuild #TinaTang

When I was in college, I vowed I would never go back to school again. I had enough. Isn't it strange that once you leave school, you long for learning?

As you probably know, I have a love of opera. In fact, opera stories often inspire my jewelry designs. I didn't grow up with musically cultured parents who brought me to the opera as a 5 year old like some fans I know. I was only introduced to it 3 years ago and I immediately felt my heart connect. I am still learning as I listen and I found this in the mailbox yesterday:

I don't recall ever getting a course book before so Met Opera Guild must figured out my love.

After a flipping through a few pages, my eyes stopped abruptly on this page and I smiled.

It exists... a bootcamp for opera. The best kind of bootcamp - no sweating nor muscle fatigue. I signed up today and I dare so am so geek-ily excited about taking this course. I plan on taking notes, too.

New Shoes and a Movie #TinaTang

Girls, instead of dinner and a movie, how about new shoes and a movie?

I had a girl date with my best friend, Sima on Saturday and as expected, we didn't do the usual. Sima wanted to see X,Y & Zee (1972) a movie selected by Simon Doonan, Barney's Creative Ambassador at Large, for the Museum of Art and Design's movie series this weekend. Mr. Doonan curated a series of movies which provided him with inspiration. He was actually in the tiny theater watching the movie, too!

X, Y & Zee is a must see love triangle which also so vividly presents seventies fashion as a backdrop to the story. Liz is at her finest as a frustrated catty wife with her philandering husband, the young and sexy Michael Caine.

Inspired by the movie, we had to go shoe shopping at the Time Warner Center Mall. Sima got "pushed" into buying this most fabulous deep burgundy platforms. Shhh, don't tell but I may have to buy the exact same pair in black patent.

While they look high, without the platforms, these Stuart Weitzman's are only 1.5 inches tall.

Now, to design a pair of earrings to go with these fall essentials...

Changing up technique. #TinaTang #Jewelry

Sometimes we get used to doing things a certain way, so much so it becomes routine and without focused thought. While I was carving wax pieces in August here, I also tried using a wax gun letting the wax drip into water. When the hot wax hits the water, it hardens immediately.

I want to kick myself for not having taken a photo of that. I have photos below of the experiment cast into sterling silver that I just picked up a couple days ago. I'm still mixed on whether I like it. The design certainly detracts from that which I would normally create. Tell me what you think.

I've named it Abstract Bouquet Necklace.

Here is a closer photo. Can you see how the hot wax hit the water and I swirled it around?

What shape does it look like to you? I think it could taste good as hard candy.

I love days like this when I get to pick up finished jewelry designs. This morning, I went straight to my production company to pick up a few pieces.

The Double Nautilus earrings look so good with oxidation!

This is what they looked like before any work was done:

Silver unpolished is chalky white looking.

I asked George, whose specialty focus at the production company is soldering, to work on a custom ID bracelet for my lovely sister in law, Janet.

George is capable of soldering even the tiniest of chains. That is an experienced skill.

Ever since I broke my point and shoot digital camera, I have been using my iPhone for jewelry photos. With the digital point and shoot, I was able to get shots like this:

I actually have a really nice camera, a Canon Rebel XS digital SLR. Yet, for some unknown reason, I have created my own mental obstacle, convincing myself it is complicated and too detailed to understand how to use it. In fact, I have created such a phobia to it, I have let the camera collect dust for nearly a year now.

Instead, I have been using my iPhone camera to take shots like this of the jewelry:

The iPhone photos allow me to create a "feel" in the Royal Crest cufflinks photo.

I have decided, today, I will conquer my fear of this unknown. It's a block we, artists, humans, impose on ourselves. We fear failure; we fear that we will confirm our illusion of our lack of ability.

This afternoon, I am tuning into YouTube.com to search for video instructions on how to use the darn thing. I will learn. I will focus and I will take a picture with the Canon!

My best friend, Sima, has been away on an artist retreat/vacation for nearly 3 weeks. I normally talk to her and text her daily. In fact, my monthly texting records with Verizon show a back and forth of 3,000-4,000 texts each month. I only text 2-3 specific people at most. That is a disgustingly excessive amount of texts.

It was during this near three week period that Sima's absence was the greatest presence in my life. She is one of two people that I call during a daily drama, to share a silly thought, or to get a girlfriend affirmation. I realized how much her friendship is a foundation of support in my daily life.

Well, she's back.

Ever have a soul sister? Forget soul mate, a soul sister is even more treasured.

I am jealous of her trip. She spend two weeks in Portugal letting her creative spirit play in a course called the Navigator's Journal. Using apoxy clay, a dremel, and chromacrackle, she brought this creation home:

Must admit, this is so "Sima": silly, warped, and delightfully imaginative.

Nestled in seaside Estoril, the course laid the playground for any desirously creative artist. One day, one day, I will make it there to take a course under the blue skies of a Portuguese beach town. Naturally, I would have to bring soul sisters, Sima and Patti, in tow.

On Friday, before "Irene" hit, I went to pick up the silver castings of two hoop earrings I created in wax. Both are simple shapes as I find simplicity withstands the test of changing styles and times.

Both are made of wax wire which is very malleable and easy to shape.

Below is a photo of the pieces now cast straight into sterling silver. I had a ring soldered to the top of the teardrop hoop to conserve labor after the casting of the pieces. Can you see the heart also has rings soldered on it where the earwire will hang? It is always important to get in as much labor before casting rather than have it done after.

This is what silver looks like unpolished.
Once these hoops are cast and completed, I will post a final photo.

The hoops got me thinking about "before and after". I wanted to do a little creating this weekend but was distracted by the unknown of what might happen during the hurricane. I ended up watching two season of Skins (the UK version) which I highly recommend. I couldn't peel my eyes from my computer.

Listening to your honest inner voice, your instincts, is often the right action. After thirteen years of design, business building, and logo design/theme changes, I've decided to go back to my original inspiration and color scheme: purple and yellow.

Seem frivolous and superficial? What inspires you and what is the impetus of your creation is vital to your artistic spirit. It's what brings the creation from inside out.

So, here it is, back to the same feel as my original website from 1999. Introducing my new website skin and design:

My original website in 1999 had a lot of hand drawn icons I created. This would be the 2011 version.

With this new skin on the website, I have created a new look for the blog that you see right now.

I love the polka dots which are supposed to be hot this 2011 fall.

Last night, I had the pleasure of taking a mini rock climbing lesson at Chelsea Piers and the opportunity to scale the indoor wall three times. Naturally, I had to take off all my jewelry to avoid it being nicked or dinged. I left on only my new mini pretzel necklace.

The most notable aspect of rock climbing is not only the self challenge, it is literally an exercise in strategy and grace. My teacher, Abby, an experienced 10 year rock climber, illustrated her technique, looking like a dancer on a vertical wall.

This is what I had on last night:

Nothing cuter than an itty bitty pretzel.

By the end of three climbs, one's arms feel like jello. The weight is supposed to be supported by one's legs but we naturally err towards using our arms. I highly recommend giving this sport a one time try as there's something exhilarating about reaching the top.

Experiences and new sights help inspire design ideas. The weekend before last, I spent Friday night catching up with one of my old employees, Kirsten, who is the gorgeous model on my website, and Saturday night bowling with Bobbie and her boyfriend. I had not seen either ladies in quite a while and seeing them made me so happy as both are doing wonderfully since they last worked with me. Doesn't sound related but being out and social is important for your creative mind!

This past weekend, I started working out and brainstorming shapes/designs I would like engraved on my new Nautilus pieces. On Monday, I picked up the polished models from my production man, Erol.

Scarlett, shown here, works closely with Erol and keeps it all organized. My pieces are on that tray you see on the table.

What Erol did for me was polish the rough sterling silver castings that you saw here. I need that step completed before bringing the pieces to my engraver, George. The engraver will carve my pattern into the silver casting so that I can make a mold from which I can make multiples.

I color scanned the polished pieces so I could use pen and pencil to play with design engraving ideas. Here are my sketches on the scanned photos:

Erol added the jump rings on the shell piece so that when I make the mold, that section of labor is completed already.

Do you see how jewelry provides an infinite amount of possibilities for the imagination? It's not like designing clothing or handbags; with jewelry, one can literally do anything with a particular shape.

It started with her tweets about music. Maxine would comment on something she was listening to which I would have been listening to as well. Next, came her funny little snarky comments. I knew I had to meet Ms. @Vixen5 because I could tell from her written dialogue, she would be a fast friend.

Finally, this Sunday, I had the pleasure of finally meeting the face and personality behind the amusing tweets. Maxine and her husband, Len and I met at De Santos in the West Village to exploit their $39 all you can drink/ pick one brunch entree deal. (Digressing: You must go. Great vibe and decor, cheap brunch, all you can drink Mimosa's or Bloody Mary's)

I absolutely want to trade hairstyles with Maxine. Hair reflects personality and Maxine is 100% that.

We had a three hour brunch talking about the our nostalgia for old school Bronx/Brooklyn hip hop which we grew up with, new people twitter introduced us to, love of trading up handbags, and the appreciation of nice things as we age. I could not have asked for a more ideal Sunday brunch, even with the torrential downpour that arrived late brunch.

It is thanks to Wendy Culpepper that this year I have focused on integrating social media, (Twitter, Facebook, and SEO concerns) into my business. Wendy used to a jewelry designer and we would meet quarterly to talk shop. A year ago, I attended a presentation she gave for industry insiders about the importance and proliferation of social media in regards to small business.

Wendy is now living her second career, and ironically chose an alternate path compared to most: she went from following her creative passion in jewelry design to now transitioning to an impassioned corporate endeavor.

As her expertise grew with her online store experience, her interests shifted. Wendy is now Head of Digital Strategy for her own company, SpiceDigitalMarketing.com . "Spice: The secret ingredient for digital success."

Wendy is as effervescent as her smile. We dined at one of my favorite NY spots: The Breslin in the Ace Hotel.

Whenever I have an online store, marketing, or production question, I turn to Wendy. This adorable woman is a wealth of knowledge swirled with bounding energy and enthusiasm.

Last night, I had the most loveliest of tweet-ups with jewelry designer, Jennifer Shingelo, of StellaSavesTheDay.com. She is a sculptor by education, lover of jewelry, and creator of the most delicious little vintage inspired jewelry.

I first saw Jennifer's hand embroidered creations at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn in this post. I distinctly remember her jewelry as I am very critical of other creations since I know what goes into designing and producing jewelry. I fell in love with her aesthetic and design immediately.

She brought me this gift last night. How did she know that THIS is the one I fell in love with at Renegade?

I rarely, and I mean RARELY, wear other designer's jewelry and I can't keep her locket off my neck.

Jennifer and I talked shop, but what was most fulfilling about the evening was the opportunity to meet such a kind, generous and creative woman. Twitter brought us together.

This afternoon, I went to the jewelry district on 47th Street to pick up my sterling silver castings for the shell waxes you saw here.

Remember Carmen from my "inside the jewelry making process" post here? She works at the casting company where I drop off my wax carvings. Here she is presenting me with my silver castings and silicon molds of my carvings.

I am always excited to see my wax carvings solidified into actual silver.

I dropped these pieces off to be polished before I bring them to my engraver. I am brainstorming on what type of pattern I would like on the shells and how I want the pieces to hang as jewelry. The most wonderful thing about creating jewelry is that the possibilities are endless; one shape can take on numerous final forms.

This weekend, I met Bobbie and Jon, her boyfriend, at Brooklyn Bowl, a fantastic newish bowling alley that features a music stage, upscale food and hip music playing over the loud speakers.

Brooklyn Bowl is an adult playground which doesn't give one the grubby feeling that most bowling alleys leave me with. Do you remember Bobbie? She worked with me for nearly 4 years before moving on to her upwardly mobile position at a major department store. I miss her.

Frankly, bowling is not the first activity I would suggest when catching up with an old friend, but Brooklyn Bowl was the perfect Saturday evening activity to goof around with a couple friends who know me so well. It helped that we were a little affected by our pitcher of frozen margaritas.

Lunch with a lady #TinaTang

Before I go on, I must emphasize that I am not a "lady who lunches". I just happened to have lunch with a friend, who I happen to regard as quite the lady.

We just had salads at Le Pain Quotidien. Like I've said before, salads taste better when someone else makes them.

Every time I see my friend, So-Chung, I silently think to myself how little I do in my allotted 24 hour day compared to her. I am sharing my appreciation of her because she is one friend I so deeply admire for her kind and ever so large heart.

In terms of accomplishments, So-Chung is a stay at home mother of three kids, all under the age of 11, used to be Managing Editor for Opera News, and previous Managing/ Executive Editor for Interior Design Magazine. She regularly volunteers for her three kids various schools, helps run the parents association for the kids' Korean school, hosts a weekly Korean television program, and performs a litany of time consuming leadership responsibilities for the Metropolitan Opera.

I became friends with So-Chung as she is the Metropolitan Opera Young Associates' Director who heads our steering committee of which I am a member. What I admire about So-Chung is that she leads with pointed goals, yet has such grace in receiving suggestions, no matter how foolish sounding, and makes all who work with her feel important.

If you ever meet her, she makes you feel so welcome, despite your wealth, class or occupation. She speaks in front of a group of people with such facility I wonder how it is fair that one person can have all the skills she possesses and presents them so effortlessly. I bow deeply in admiration, respect, and love to my good friend, So-Chung, who now happens to enjoy making jewelry.

Last night, I saw the private screening of Mozart's Sister, a film that reveals the aspirations and young life story of what the title indicates, Mozart's older sister, who was also an extremely talented musician. I highly recommend the French made film and won't reveal too many details, but wish to express how the film had a constant undertone of sadness and in leaving the theater, I felt grateful to be able to live my life the way I choose.

A constant reminder in my mind that I have the freedom to create my own schedule, I decided today would be one without self imposed constraints.

On the schedule today: Apple Store, jewelry district, wholesale district, and working on my jewelry showroom displays. No particular order, no rush, and no pressure. Also, today, no girly dresses. I'm just Tina from the block.

I used to depend on a man to help put up pictures on my wall, install shelving, and put Ikea furniture together.

Two summers ago, I asked a male friend to show me all the basics about an electric power drill/driver so that I could get comfortable doing it myself. Thank you, Richard, for teaching me a life-long skill that makes me feel truly independent.

I feel one with my power drill. I secretly feel like a female superhero when I hold power tools.

Today, I am working on converting my vintage frame displays into actual hanging pieces that I can affix to my steel shelving that I have in my studio/office.

The "before" where the frame didn't have hooks to hang on my shelving.

I had to buy screw eye hooks from Home Depot:

These little babies need to go into the wood frame where an S hook can attach to my shelving.

Then, I had to drill holes into the wood frame:

Don't be afraid of the power this drill holds.

After a small hole is created, simply manually screw the eye hook into frame.

Nice manicure, right?

Now the jewelry display frames can hang on my shelves and I have a proper showroom display.

Making use of space in NYC as creatively as possible.

If you don't use power tools already, I hope this encourages you to learn. You will feel wonderfully independent once you get past the fear and discomfort. I fully believe in you; you can do it.
